Mobile Exhaust Repairs Reading — At Your Home or Workplace
A blowing exhaust, unusual noise or visible damage to the exhaust system needs addressing promptly. A leaking exhaust introduces carbon monoxide into the vehicle cabin and will fail an MOT. Most exhaust repairs can be carried out at your home or car park without specialist ramp equipment.
Signs of an Exhaust Problem
- Loud, rumbling exhaust note — blowing joint, hole in a section or failed silencer
- Rattling under the car — broken exhaust hanger or heat shield
- Hissing on acceleration — small exhaust leak, often at manifold or front pipe joint
- Visible rust or holes — corrosion in the middle or rear sections
- Failed MOT on exhaust noise or emissions — requires repair and retest
Exhaust System Sections
Front Pipe
Connects the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter. Prone to corrosion at manifold joints. Flex pipes (corrugated section) are common failure points — they crack and blow.
Catalytic Converter (Cat)
Fitted in the mid/front section, the catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions. A rattling cat has broken internal substrate — it will fail an MOT emissions test and eventually block completely. Cat replacement from £180.
Centre Section and Intermediate Silencer
The mid-section can corrode at joints and internally. Section replacement from £85.
Rear Box (Back Box / Silencer)
The most common exhaust replacement. The rear silencer corrodes from the inside out due to condensation. Symptoms: increased exhaust note, rattling baffle inside the box. Rear box replacement from £85 depending on the vehicle.
Exhaust Manifold
The manifold carries exhaust gases from the engine. Manifold gaskets fail (causing a ticking noise at startup) and manifold cracks occasionally occur. Manifold gasket from £95. Manifold replacement from £180.

What We Cannot Do at the Roadside
Exhaust welding requires specialist equipment and is not possible at a mobile visit. Where a section cannot be bolted in place and requires welding, we can refer you to a trusted local exhaust centre. We will always recommend the most cost-effective approach.

Frequently asked questions
Can an exhaust be repaired at the roadside? +
Yes for most repairs. Section replacement, joint repairs, hanger replacement and heat shield work can all be done without a ramp on most vehicles. Exhaust welding requires a static workshop, but bolted section replacement is straightforward at the roadside.
Is a noisy exhaust an MOT failure? +
Yes. An exhaust must not emit excessive noise or leak gases. A blowing joint, corroded section or damaged catalyst will cause an MOT failure. Address exhaust noise before your next MOT test.
My exhaust is rattling but not blowing — what causes that? +
Exhaust rattle without blowing is almost always a broken or detached exhaust hanger or rubber mount. The section of exhaust is vibrating against the vehicle body. Hanger replacement is quick and inexpensive — from £35.
